Ricovir-EM (Generic Truvada)

Common use

Ricovir-EM is used to treat and prevent HIV-1 infection.

It combines two antiretroviral agents—Emtricitabine (200 mg) and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (300 mg)—which work together to stop the virus from multiplying in the body.

Ricovir-EM is also widely used for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to help reduce the risk of HIV infection in people at high risk.

Dosage and direction

Ricovir-EM can be taken in two ways, depending on your HIV prevention plan:

1. Daily PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis):

Take one tablet once daily, with or without food.

This is the most effective and widely recommended method for both men and women. It must be taken consistently every day.

2. On-Demand PrEP (for MSM only):

Take 2 tablets 2–24 hours before sex, then 1 tablet 24 hours after the first dose, and another 1 tablet 48 hours after the first dose.

This method is only recommended for cisgender men who have sex with men and should not be used by women or transgender individuals.

Do not stop or switch dosing strategies without speaking to a healthcare provider. Missing doses may reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Precautions

Before using Ricovir-EM, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or other medical conditions. Do not use with other HIV medications without medical advice. Regular kidney function tests may be needed during treatment. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.

Contraindications

Do not use Ricovir-EM if you are allergic to Tenofovir or Emtricitabine. It should not be used with other antiretroviral medications unless directed by a healthcare provider. Avoid use if you have severe kidney impairment or require dialysis.

Possible side effect

Common side effects of Ricovir-EM may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, or dizziness. Some people may experience changes in kidney function or bone mineral density. Serious side effects are rare. Contact your healthcare provider if any unusual symptoms occur.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Ricovir-EM, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one—do not double up. Continue with your regular dosing schedule. Consistent daily use is important for effectiveness, especially for PrEP.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Short-term exposure to temperatures as low as 15°C (59°F) is acceptable. Do not freeze or store in the refrigerator.
