Indication:HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in HIV-negative individuals at high risk of infection
Tafero-EM is used for: PrEP (HIV prevention) – taken daily to reduce the risk of HIV infection, especially for men who have sex with men (MSM).
Each tablet contains Emtricitabine 200mg and Tenofovir Alafenamide 25mg. It is usually taken once a day, with or without food.
Tafero-EM can be taken in two ways, depending on your HIV prevention plan:
1. Daily PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
Take one tablet once daily, with or without food. This is the most effective and widely recommended method for both men and women. It must be taken consistently every day to maintain protection.
2. On-Demand PrEP (for MSM only) Take 2 tablets 2 to 24 hours before sex, then 1 tablet 24 hours after the first dose, and another tablet 48 hours after the first dose.
This method is only recommended for cisgender men who have sex with men and is not suitable for women or transgender individuals.
Do not stop or switch dosing strategies without consulting a healthcare provider. Missing doses may reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
Get tested for HIV before starting Tafero-EM. This medication is for prevention only and should not be used if you are already HIV-positive.
Take consistently as directed. Missing doses may reduce protection.
Do not use for vaginal sex prevention — Tafero-EM has not been approved for PrEP in people exposed to HIV through vaginal sex.
Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems before using this medication.
Do not combine with other HIV medications unless advised by a healthcare provider.
Do not use Tafero-EM if you are HIV-positive. This medication is for prevention (PrEP) only.
Do not use if you are allergic to Emtricitabine or Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF).
Not recommended for people with severe kidney or liver disease.
Not approved for PrEP in individuals exposed to HIV through vaginal sex.
Not for use in children under 18, unless prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Tafero-EM is generally well tolerated, but some users may experience:
Headache
Nausea or stomach discomfort
Diarrhea
Fatigue
Mild weight loss
Changes in kidney function (rare)
Elevated liver enzymes (rare)
Most side effects are mild and go away over time.
If you experience serious symptoms such as allergic reaction, severe fatigue, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, stop using the medication and contact a doctor immediately.
If you miss a dose of Tafero-EM:
Daily PrEP: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one — do not double dose.
Try to take it at the same time every day.
On-Demand PrEP: Follow the schedule carefully.
Missing doses may reduce protection. Start a new cycle if needed and consult a doctor if unsure.
Store at room temperature: 15°C–30°C (59°F–86°F)
Keep in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight
Do not store in the bathroom
Keep out of reach of children and pets
Do not use after the expiration date
